In Event of Moon Disaster was the result of a collaboration that was a long time coming, between myself and other Telephone Bronco Theater Company member M. Sam Goodman. Sam and I are both playwrights, first and foremost. Sam also does some directing, and I also do (only when coerced), some acting. Knowing that, in order to keep production costs low (read, almost $0), we were going to make up the bulk of the entire "team" - both cast and crew, Sam and I had the unique challenge of writing a piece that we would best be able to act.
The other challenge of the process: my voice and Sam's voice are pretty darn different. But we had collaborated together before, and we were excited to do it again.
Turns out, this set of challenges turned out to create something very special. In Event of Moon Disaster is not a play I would have ever written on my own - and I don't think it's a play that Sam would have ever written on his own. That's very exciting as a performer, writer, and producer. Sam's unique style was the perfect "shake up" to mine. It challenged me to stretch myself beyond my ordinary bounds.
Because we were only 2 (we became 3 when we added the multi-talented Jackie Avitabile as Director/Crew/Everything else, and 4 when we added Stefan Hartmann as walk-on-role/crew/everything else), this was a particularly intimate project, which made it even more intense, special, and satisfying. Before we started this project, I hoped it would stretch me as a writer and satisfy my never-ending itch to make theater. It easily did both. It also taught me a butt-load more lessons on self-producing, got me through a particularly challenging time in my life, and deepened some friendships in a way that only collaborative art can. So...yeah. Good memories.
